Explanation: to remember which verbs in French take “être” as an auxiliary. They are almost always used with “être” (be) unless there is a direct object, in which case, the auxiliary “avoir” (to have) is used.

Explanation (in French): Cette mnemotechnique indique les verbes avec lesquels on emploie “être” comme auxiliaire. Si, dans de rares cas, il y a un objet direct, on emploie le verbe “avoir” comme auxiliaire.

 

Example – Je SUIS monte pour m’assurer que la porte etait fermee a clé. (= avec être)

Example 2 – J’AI monte l’escalier pour arriver au 2e etage. (= avec avoir)
