Explanation
This is an easy acronym to help you remember the names of the five Great Lakes: HOMES, standing for Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior. SHOME lists the exact same five lakes, just starting from Superior instead. Each letter represents one part of it.
Update: By order of the President, Ontario lake will be named lake America, effective immediately. In which case the mnemonic would become SHAME.
The Great Lakes, also called the Great Lakes of North America, are a series of large interconnected freshwater lakes spanning the Canada-United States border. Together they hold about one-fifth of the world's fresh surface water, and about 95% of the surface fresh water in the United States alone - only the polar ice caps hold more.
