This is a learning trick to help you remember the ten "Characteristics of Life." Take the first letter of each word, where the 'N' doubles as both the word "'N'" (and) and the letter for Nutrition: CORD 'N' GERMS → C-O-R-D-N-G-E-R-M-S, standing for Cells, Osmoregulation, Reproduction, Death, Nutrition, Growth, Excretion, Respiration, Movement and Sensitivity.
