No Dirty Dogs! Numerator Divided (by) Denominator

Mnemonic Device:

  • No Dirty Dogs!

Explanation: To remember which number is the Numerator or the Denominator when working with fractions.

  • Numerator Divided (by) Denominator when reading or converting fractions.

Additional Notes:

  • 3/53 divided by 5 = 0.6
    • Hint: the decimal six-tenths is equivalent to three-fifths.
  • Students tend to divide the LARGER # by the SMALLER number and commonly miss these types of items.
  • Also, I teach my students to automatically “annex 0’s” by writing the understood decimal, placing it on the quotient bar directly above and then annexing at least two zeros.
