Explanation
This is a mnemonic to help you remember which number is the Numerator and which is the Denominator when working with fractions: the numerator is the top number, the denominator is the bottom number, and dividing the numerator by the denominator gives you the fraction's decimal value. Take the first letter of each word: No Dirty Dogs! → N-D-D, standing for Numerator Divided (by) Denominator.
Example:
- 3/5
- 3 divided by 5 = 0.6
- Hint: the decimal six-tenths is equivalent to three-fifths.
Always divide top by bottom, in that order, even if the numerator happens to be smaller than the denominator (like in the example above) - it's a common mistake to flip the two and divide the larger number by the smaller one instead.
